Detrimental malpractice has paralyzed the economy ushering an outward endemic emigration, Maronite patriarch Bshara Rahi, warned during Sunday homily at the Lady's church in Bkirki today.

Assisted by a couple of cardinals and 2 priests, the patriarch marked the advent of "International Refugee Day" by saluting Papal nuncio Gabriel Caccia's presence at the service and those helping out in alleviating refugee suffering here in Lebanon.

Reciting verses from the Gospels of Luke where Jesus had fed the needy and the poor, the patriarch underscored divine responsibilities vested into officials by God in order to provide groups and individuals with socio-economic and organizational necessities of life. Paying tribute to clerics engaged in such activities, Rahi quoted the papal injunction calling for assisting the refugees as a means of translating New Testament teachings into practice.

As the Maronite Church stretches out a helping hand to the refugees by providing to the destitute and the poor, the Church pleads at the same time with the rulers to do more of the same by reinvesting into combating poverty and hunger by effecting a more equitable distribution of wealth, he contended; countries hosting refugees must also desist from racially discriminating against them, Rahi stressed.

While it is however impossible for Lebanon to put up with all those Palestinian and Syrian refugees exceeding half the population, the international community must end the war in Syria and Iraq in order to render their repatriation possible, he added.

We pray the Almighty One to inspire our politicians into electing a new president while catering to people's basic needs, Rahi concluded.
