Democratic Gathering Leader Walid Jumblatt said on Monday that any solution to the Lebanese political crisis should be set on the basis of the Saudi-Syrian settlement.

"The S-S settlement is a major and great starting point which ought not be surpassed or avoided despite many attempts to hamper it," Jumblatt told Al-Anbaa weekly.

The Democratic Gathering leader chose to keep his promise to Syria by keeping talks he held with Syrian officials within the last couple of days confidential.

Jumblatt attributed the responsibility of internal impasse in Lebanon to all the Lebanese with no exception. He also reminded of his pre and post Hizbullah reconciliation stance concerning the Special Tribunal for Lebanon STL, where he always warned from any "political abuse of STL."

As for the naming of a new Prime Minister, Jumblatt depicted this whole issue as extremely critical, stressing on the importance of not having to marginalize one sect for the interest of another.

"If a consensus set on the basis of abolishing indictment influence on Lebanon is to be reached, then mutual work to achieve this end distances the possibility of marginalization, and prohibits escalation of tension," he said.

He called for the respect of each sect's right to choose the one who represents it, as he himself has done in the past.

"It is better for us to repeat this experiment with the forthcoming cabinet in a bid to preserve apt political and popular representation, on the basis of coexistence," Jumblatt said.

He applauded Lebanese President Michel Sleiman's decision to postpone ministerial consultations for re-naming a prime minister.

"This paves the way for wider political negotiations out of the current crises," Jumblatt said.

Referencing latest information unveiled by some Lebanese politicians on the resignation of Maronite Patriarch Mar Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, Jumblatt said that those who rushed said information to the public should have at least mulled such step.

"They should have preserved this man's great national position as he always sought means to safeguard Lebanon at the direst of times," he concluded.
